Welcome to Morehead Methodist Church
Where We Love God and Love Our Neighbor

In the gospel of Luke, an expert of the law asks Jesus, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?” Jesus responds by asking a couple questions of his own saying, “what is written in the Law? How do you read it?” The expert replies by citing two commandments: “‘love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’; and, ‘love your neighbor as yourself.’” Jesus happily affirms the expert’s reply saying, “you have answered correctly.”

By God’s grace, we here at Morehead continue growing in our commitment to love both God and neighbor because we know that only by loving our neighbor can we most fully express our love of God… and only when we grow in our love of God can we most sincerely love our neighbor.

Loving Our Neighbor

So, what does loving our neighbor look like? When the expert in the law asks Jesus, “and who is my neighbor,” Jesus responds by telling the parable of the Good Samaritan, which doesn’t tell us who our neighbors are but shows us how to be a neighbor. So, we learn that loving our neighbor means being a neighbor in the same way the Good Samaritan in the parable was a neighbor.

That’s the kind of neighbor we aim to be here at Morehead UMC. We strive to be the front porch of our community where our light is always on… and everyone is invited, and made to feel welcomed and at home. We aspire to be a neighbor like the Good Samaritan… to care for those in our community however we can, and to offer a place where everyone belongs.

Loving God

We at Morehead also know that, to most sincerely love our neighbors, we must continue growing in our love of God. Like the light on a front porch has to be connected to a source of power before it can shine, we too need to keep connected with God who makes our light shine. (John 15:5) It is by God’s grace that we are able shine for all our neighbors (Matthew 5:14-16). And the deeper our connection, the brighter we shine.
